A friend introduced me to martial arts when I was 13 years old, at the time I was overweight had no confidence and getting bullied at school. My first instructor was Mr Andrew Murray, he encouraged me to take part in classes and helped me start on my martial arts journey. At first Taekwondo was just a hobby that I did once or twice a week, however after my first couple of gradings I began training up to 6 times a week, entering my first competition as a yellow belt in 1995.In 1997 my outlook on martial arts was changed dramatically by meeting Master Phillip Ameris, Technical Director for AIMAA. Master Ameris introduced me to the principal of cross training, in particular Taekwondo and Jui – Jitsu and the benefits of knowing not only how to fight standing but also how to fight from the ground. From that moment I went searching for new knowledge which led me to training with various instructors in Thai boxing, Aikido, Karate and Jui-Jitsu.In 1998 I became part of the AIMAA England Team and competed in the Heavy weight division in England, Ireland, Wales and Germany. In 2000 I was also part of the AIMAA England Grappling team against Ireland.

I have also competed in senior heavy weight divisions in:

1998 AIMAA British Championships 2nd
1998 AIMAA North of England Championships 3rd
1999 West Yorkshire Championships 1st
1999 AIMAA British Championships 2nd
1999 ACTS Competition Grappling 2nd
2002 AIMAA British Championships Grappling 2nd
As well as other local and inter club competitions through out the country.

I now teach Taekwondo and enjoy passing on the knowledge to others that I have gained over the years, however I still train in WTF, ITF and Jui-Jitsu as I believe there is always something out there to learn.

I started training in Taekwondo in 1993 under Mr Andrew Murray having previously trained in Shukokai Karate, achieving the grade of purple belt. After my first lesson in Taekwondo I knew it was the fighting style for me, it seemed to suit my character and personality.Under Mr Murrays supervision I went on to achieve many sparring titles, Mr Murray also encouraged me to attend classes with his instructor Mr Kim Stones which I gladly did.

I started training 8 years ago doing kickboxing, which started my interest in martial arts leading me to Karate.I achieved my brown belt in both styles but wanted to increase my knowledge and experience training with different students and seeing what other styles had to offer. This search for knowledge led me to start Taekwondo, in which I have achieved my black belt. Through hard work and commitment I won the AIMAA British Championships in both sparring and patterns for four years in a row. In 2000 I won gold at the AIMAA World Championships in Dublin in sparring.I was a member of the AIMAA England Team until 2000 and won all my fights whilst competing with them in various locations. My goal is now to pass that knowledge and experience that I have gained on to the younger students, to encourage them to compete, build their confidence and introduce Taekwondo as a part of their lives.

My dad first intoduced me to Taekwondo when i was 8 years old, i was slightly apprehensive at first but as i kept going and learning more about Taekwondo my interest grew. The main reason i have managed to get to where i am today is from the hard work and support from my instructor and the club as a whole. In the future i hope to be able to teach Taekwondo to younger children and help their knowledge of Taekwondo increase.
